Mythology Converges With Technology To Combat Biomaterials Associated Infections

چکیده
The integration of nanotechnology, biotechnology, biology, physical science, chemistry, biomedical science and medicine; for the best scope, development and application in science and technology is being studied for decades. But the intimation of the immense potentiality of mythology converging with technology is scarce. For the first time, we report here the combo power of the mythological Peepal tree, Ficus religiosa, in convergence with nanotechnology to combat biomaterials associated infections. Infections associated with biomaterials such as medical devices, implants and prosthetic materials, are due to bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation at the implantation site. Although much research has been focused on sterilization, aseptic procedures and on developing polymers that resist biofilm formation; bacterial infection still remains a major impediment in the utility of such biomaterials. The emergence of multidrug resistant ‘super bugs’, like the ones recently discovered, ‘NDM-l’ (New Delhi Metallobeta-lactamase), have made this global problem rather alarming. For reducing this incidence of biomaterials associated infections we have developed self-sterilizing silver/chitosan bionanocomposite via biosynthesis for application as coating over biomedical implants and devices. This material has been characterized through various techniques and antimicrobial studies have

An immobilized liquid interface prevents device associated bacterial infection in vivo.
Virtually all biomaterials are susceptible to biofilm formation and, as a consequence, device-associated infection. The concept of an immobilized liquid surface, termed slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), represents a new framework for creating a stable, dynamic, omniphobic surface that displays ultralow adhesion and limits bacterial biofilm formation. A widely used biomaterial in ...
متن کاملCorrelation between the Eponyms of Medical Sciences and Mythology
The medical terms currently used are derived from a variety of sources. These terms are often derived from an eponym. Eponyms are a long-standing tradition in medicine. Eponyms usually involve honoring a prominent physician-scientist who played a significant role in identifying the disease or the person who first reported the disease or the area where a disease first broke out in there. Eponyms...

Antibacterial Modification of Intravascular Catheter Surface for the Prevention of Catheter-Associated Infection
Objective: Intravascular catheter-associated infection has been increasing hospitalization in post-surgery patients mainly due to microbial colonization of the catheter surface and formation of a superficial biofilm layer. The present study is aimed in developing an effective antibacterial device which can prevent colonization of organisms by modification of catheter. Methods: In the present st...
